What is TV station hosting?
TV station hosting is the streaming side of a television channel: it takes your live broadcast and your recorded programmes and delivers them to viewers on phones, computers and TVs. Ours runs on the Akamai CDN and is managed in StreamHub, our own control panel, with live TV, video on demand, DVR, content protection, ads and analytics in one place.
Why does it run on the Akamai CDN?
Because video is too heavy for one server to carry to a big audience. Akamai delivers your stream from edge servers close to each viewer, so when big news or a cup final brings everyone at once, viewers are served from many places instead of queuing at one server.
What does the 20 TB minimum commitment mean?
Your plan is priced on the transfer you commit to each month. You can buy any amount. The least is 20 TB, about 14,814 hours of viewing at 720p HD. Larger stations buy more, and your price is based on the amount you buy. Ask our sales team for a quote.
How much does TV station hosting cost?
It is quoted for each station, on the monthly transfer you commit to (from 20 TB), because a regional channel and a national broadcaster need very different volumes. Ask our sales team for a price: tell them your expected audience and the quality you broadcast in. Payment is by bank wire transfer only, not by credit card.
What is adaptive bitrate streaming?
Your channel is delivered in several qualities at once, and the player keeps choosing the best one the viewer's connection can handle. A viewer on fibre gets the sharpest picture; one on a train gets a lower quality instead of a frozen screen.
What is DVR streaming?
DVR lets viewers pause and rewind a live channel, then catch up or jump back to live, as on a set-top box. 1 hour of DVR is included, so someone who tunes in late can go back up to 1 hour and see how the story began.
How is my content protected?
Two ways, each set in StreamHub. GEO Secure plays your channel only in the countries you choose, for rights that stop at a border. Domain Lock lets only your own websites embed the player, so nobody can put your channel on theirs.
Can my station earn from its own ads?
Yes. StreamHub plays your own video ads as pre-rolls before live starts: you add the ads, set a skip button, how often one viewer sees them and when a campaign runs, and see how many played, were watched to the end, skipped or clicked. The revenue is yours.
Does the player work on every device?
Yes. It is an HTML5 player that resizes to any screen and plays in the browser on phones, tablets, computers and smart TVs, with no app or plugin. You embed it on your website with one code and brand it with your logo.
What can I see in the analytics?
Who is watching now, minute by minute, and over 24 hours, 7 or 30 days: views, watch hours, the most at once, the picture quality viewers received and how fast it started, plus their countries, devices, systems, browsers and the websites the player is embedded on.
Can I stream radio as well?
Yes. StreamHub runs radio channels beside TV channels in the same login. If you have a radio station too, see radio station hosting.
Do I need the rights to stream my programmes?
Yes. Streaming online is a separate right from broadcasting, for programmes, films, sport and music alike, and your broadcast licence may not cover it. We provide the hosting, not the rights. GEO Secure helps you keep to the countries your rights cover.
